the book presents gino valle's original architectural drawings and many photos of the buildings he constructed in carnia, the mountain region of friuli venezia giulia near the border with austria. included are: the treppo and sutrio town halls, the thermal baths at arta, casa quaglia, the kursaal at arta, the yet unpublished fielis kindergarten and other projects. gino valle's work has always been the target of critical attention, published regularly in the most important italian and foreign architectural periodica; although never given adequate space it is also present in the histories of contemporary architecture.

gino valle, born in udine 1923, graduated from the venice school of architecture (iuav) in 1948 and together with his sister nani joined the office of his father provino, transforming it into studio valle architetti in partnership with piera ricci menichetti. in 1951 studied at the harvard graduate school of design in cambridge (usa) as fulbright scholar receiving the bachelor of city and regional planning. in the 1950s became product design consultant for solari and zanussi. numerous of his projects won the golden compass award and in 1995 he received the golden compass career award. a long time member of the icsid education working group and vice-president of the same institution in 1964 he started teaching architectural design in many universities in europe, south africa and the usa; in 1972 became professor of architectural design at the venice school of architecture where he taught until 2001. a member of the academy of san luca in roma, he was awarded in 1988 the antonio feltrinelli prize for architectural achievements from the accademia nazionale dei lincei. in 1993 he received the honorary fellowship from the american institute of architects and in 2002 the silver medal to honorary citizens in the fields of culture from the president of italy. he died in udine in 2003. the members and associates of studio valle architetti continue his professional activity. among gino valle's numerous built projects there are the zanussi headquarters in porcia, pordenone (1959-61), fantoni industries osoppo, udine (1973-78), galvani business centre, pordenone (1972-82), ibm ltalia headquarters in basiano, milano (1980-83), banca commerciale italiana head offices in new york (1981-86), giudecca low income housing, venezia (1980-86), block 606 elementary school in berlin (1983-87), new olivetti headquarters in ivrea (1984-86), hotel and ibm europe headquarters in la defènse in paris, and padova law court (1984-90). in the 1990's valle started deutsche bank headquarters in milano bicocca, the bufalotta masterplan in roma, with ikea building currently under construction. he also built the eco refrigerazione factory near udine, the university of padova school of psichology, the olympia theatre in paris and the offices of societé generale in boulevard des capucines, the lafarge offices and laboratories in avignon, and brescia law court. most recent projects include portello masterplan and development in milano, vicenza municipal theatre, padova university student housing and congress centre.

giovanni corbellini, ph.d. in architectural design at iuav, thought at the universities of ferrara and venice and is currently professor at the university of trieste. author of many essays he published also: piccoli progetti (1990, with f. tentori and g. carnevale), uniformità e variazione. lo spazio urbano nei quartieri contemporanei (1990), the cd-rom 1984-1998. una linea di ricerca iuav (1999, with f. tentori), grande e veloce. strumenti compositivi nei contesti contemporanei (2000). editor of archint nr. 8, dal volume all'interfaccia (2000), he completed a study on njiric + njiric for parametro nr. 244 (2003). he received various awards and mentions in international design competitions and is currently editor of parole chiave for the digital magazine arch'it.

alessandro rocca, is an architectural critic who teaches architectural design at milan polytechnic. he is interested in the contemporary urban and landscape transformation and is the author of numerous books, reviews and essays; an editor of lotus international and navigator he curated the books: la città dipinta - genova '92 (electa, 1991), fiere e città (triennale di milano-charta, 1997), ian ritchie (motta, 1998) and was the author of educatorium a utrecht, rem koolhaas (alinea, 1999), atlante della triennale (triennale di milano-charta, 1999), i limiti del museo (dams bologna, 2000), pioltello. architetture del paesaggio metropolitano (skira, 2003), natura artificialis. il progetto dell'ambiente e l'architettura del paesaggio (clup, 2003).
